Self-messaging is a great way to center yourself as a leader, but the real challenge comes with developing what you choose to say to yourself. The foundational self-message for any person aspiring to authentic leadership is this, “It is not about me, but about we!” For me, I filtered the messages I further developed through the foundational message mentioned above and they have ultimately become timeless truths. I am reluctant to share my truths because they were my truths developed for my journey to becoming an authentic leader, but my son convinced me to share this one. Here it is:

“Know the people you lead, pay attention to their needs,

don’t take them for granted, lest you end up empty handed.”

Some argue “knowledge is power” and those arguing from this perspective are both powerless and insecure people and will withhold knowledge to maintain some kind of power over someone or something. How sad for tapping into potential. The truth is, Knowledge is a connector, and wise leaders understand the positive connection knowledge creates. The poetic message above drives the thoughts and actions of wise leaders because it pushes the leader to, first, connect with people and get to know them as best they can. Second, to pay attention so they can demonstrate their ability as a leader to move beyond greed and meet a need. Third, knowing them as best they can to protect the leader from taking their people for granted. Fourth, it reminds the leader how important it is to keep talented, committed, sincere and loyal people on the team by doing the first three.

What you say to yourself at the beginning of the day will pave the way for how you will play! What do you say?
